It was a mighty fine weekend in May to travel to Beavers Bend National Park and enjoy nature. Among the travel group was a variety of seasoned trekkers, semi-experienced trekkers, and first time nature wanderers. Activities included intro to kayaking on the lake, intermediate river kayaking, swimming, hiking and lots of playing outside and of course we made Smores!
This was a first time experience for everyone where we invited families and siblings to trek with our regular Spring Health Trekker Challenge Team. While the non-program trekkers had free time during some of the activities for our Challenge kids, we spent meals together and hiked together and built a wonderful sense of family for the One Great River experience.
While the obvious goals of love of nature as well as challenge by choice were alive and well, the less obvious lessons of kitchen chores, rooming with new folks in cabins, using community bathrooms, and even lessons of leisure were at work indeed.
If you have ever shared a One Great River Trek, you would have been so proud to have seen these families in action. If you haven’t been a part of the family yet, drop us an email to sign up for future opportunities.
